I have just managed to fix my problem with the widescreen on my new footage, unfortunately I couldn't change the format because the process was too long and so I had to settle for cropping the image to make it look widescreen, however I think this has been very effective and a viewer would not be able to tell the difference when watching the video.
To the right is a screen shot of my new footage. I think it has turned out well as all the important parts of the shot can still be seen.
